Surf Lifesaving & Rookie Lifeguard Award

Nick Thorn Surf Coaching introduces a new training award available for 12-18 year old’s, nationally recognised by the Surf Lifesaving Association of Great Britain and the Royal Lifesaving Society UK. The Surf Lifesaving & Rookie Lifeguard Award aims to provide youngsters with the Surf Lifesaving and survival skills proficiency needed before training for the RLSS Pool Award or the NARS Beach Lifeguard - both available when they turn 16 years old.
All Schools are under a duty to ensure that their pupils reach adequate standards in swimming and water safety at relevant points of the different stages under the National Curriculum Programme of Study for Physical Education. Swimming seems to be dominant in water-based PE lessons, although water sense and lifesaving skills could be considered of equal importance to the young person.
For pupils in North Devon schools, with easy access to beaches and an increased take-up of water sports, it can be argued that all-round water safety skills are essential. Nick Thorn Surf Coaching believes that pupils should be able to recognise potential risks and dangers, have personal survival skills and be confident both in and out of the water.
Skills
The Rookie Lifeguard Award involves rescue and lifeguard
scenarios, which will strengthen transferable skills such
