Nick Thorn Surf Awards

In 2010 we are offering all of our surfers the chance to achieve the TNT Surf Award Levels 1-5. This 5 level award scheme follows the British Surfing Associations award criteria, and gives you the chance to focus on individual aspects of your surfing. Surfing through the awards makes you a more complete surfer and is a great opportunity for beginners to understand water safety, techniques and surf ettiquette.

The various Surf Awards are given on completion of the specific surf criteria for each level, given below:

TNT LEVEL 1

- Parts of the board.
- Flags and signals.
- Head protection on wipe out.
- Carry board up and over the waves in control.
- Catching of the wave with controlled finish.
- Ride prone position to knees in control.

TNT LEVEL 2

- Basic use of surf terminology.
- Knowledge of surf etiquette.
- Emergency phone use, what to say.
- Wave selection.
- Five second stand on board, riding in on wave.
- Ride showing good stop via tail stall.

TNT LEVEL 3

- Identify safe surfing area on beach.
- Knowledge of wave types and rips.
- Awareness of improving and maintaining fitness.
- Paddle out in small waves.
- Turn board outback in a lying and seated position.
- Turn left and right on waves.

TNT LEVEL 4

- Knowledge of how wind affects waves.
- Identify peaks and rips, lefts and rights.
- Paddling board fast in good trim.
- Timing take off on different waves.
- Angled take off, left and right.
- Ride frontside and backside on green wave with bottom turn.

TNT LEVEL 5

- Introduction to hard boards.
- Different types and uses of hard boards.
- Wetsuits, types and uses.
- Paddling hard board in good trim.
- Catching green waves riding to beach standing.
- Take offs straight to feet, good pop up.
